5 Tips for Creating an Incident Response Plan in Camps and K-12 Schools

No administrative team wants to believe that misconduct can happen in their school, but relying on the hope that it won’t is short-sighted. To protect students and staff, all allegations require thoughtful and timely response, even those that are seemingly minor or unfounded.

  • Don’t wait.  Schools that wait until the worst happens to create a plan miss meaningful opportunities to gather information and act expediently when a report is made.

  • Conduct a legally-compliant policy review.  Understanding the legal impact of your policies is a critical step to facilitate an expedient incident response.

  • Identify legal counsel to advise on reporting requirements.  Form a relationship with a law firm that can advise you about mandatory reporting requirements and other legal requirements.

  • Educate students and faculty.  Review your training protocols with a professional to ensure you are up-to-date.

  • Tell the community.  Communicate to your parent, alumni and employee constituents that you are working to foster and build a healthy community and set expectations for how the process will work.
